What makes our STEM program stand out
STEM Implementation K-12-to-Career
STEM is a pillar to the WD approach to education and preparing students as functioning members of the community by being exposed to the increasingly technology driven world. Between the three STEM labs, every student is exposed to the career opportunities available with STEM.

STEM Promotion
STEM Day and other events throughout the year expose students on what is to come as
their educational journey in the building continues. Elementary students are exposed to
opportunities at the high school, and high school students are exposed to industry
employers looking for talent or mentorship opportunities.

Diversified Options for all Secondary Ed Students, College and Workforce Bound
WD hosts several different NLPS pathways that allow students to explore their interests in
engineering, digital media, cybersecurity, information technology, business operations, and more. There is not another school of this size offering such a vast array of career exploration
opportunities.
Engineering with Industry Experts
At South Central Jr./Sr. High School, STEM learning is powered by strong partnerships that connect students directly with real-world professionals. By bringing industry experts into the classroom, South Central creates authentic learning experiences rooted in purpose, relevance, and real-world application. These partnerships allow students to learn alongside engineers and scientists, gaining insight into real careers while applying their skills to meaningful challenges.
A recent example came from the Environmental Science program, where students completed a STEM engineering design challenge focused on water filtration. Using common household materials, students worked through the full engineering process to design, build, test, and refine their own water filter prototypes. During RTI/enrichment time, students joined a live Zoom session with a professional engineer and a university engineering student, who reviewed their designs and provided expert feedback. Student volunteers presented their group prototypes and received valuable insights to improve their work. This powerful collaboration elevated the learning experience, strengthened student confidence, and demonstrated how classroom problem solving connects directly to real-world environmental engineering.

STEM Day
STEM Day was a fantastic celebration of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration for students, teachers, staff, and families alike!
