What STEM means at South Central Elementary School

At South Central Elementary School, STEM learning is a driving force in launching student success through a high-quality, future-focused education. Aligned with the mission of the South Central Community School Corporation, our STEM direction empowers students to become lifelong learners who are prepared to succeed as responsible, self-sufficient citizens in a global society.

Our STEM program is intentionally student-centered and grounded in research-based instructional practices. Through inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, and engineering design processes embedded within mathematics and science instruction, students engage in rigorous, authentic learning experiences that build deep understanding and real-world relevance. STEM learning at South Central encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and perseverance while helping students apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Access and opportunity are central to our STEM vision. All students participate in hands-on STEM learning through classroom integration, weekly designated STEM time, and the use of our Makerspace. These experiences support creativity, collaboration, and innovation while ensuring equitable access to high-quality STEM resources and instruction for every learner.

South Central Elementary values collaboration and continuous improvement. Our STEM Leadership Team meets regularly to monitor progress, reflect on practice, and plan for the ongoing growth of our STEM program. Through the use of CREATE2THINK curriculum in grades K–6 and alignment with PLTW programming at the secondary level, our STEM direction intentionally prepares students for a smooth transition to junior high, high school, and beyond.

Community partnership strengthens our STEM work. Through our STEM Advisory Committee, which includes school leaders and local business partners, South Central Elementary fosters authentic connections between learning and the real world. These partnerships support STEM career awareness, relevance, and community engagement while reinforcing the importance of parent and community involvement in student success.

By providing engaging, rigorous, and inclusive STEM experiences, South Central Elementary School ensures that students leave elementary school confident, capable, and prepared for future challenges. Our STEM direction reflects our commitment to exceptional academic growth, continuous improvement, and the belief that every student can succeed in life, learning, and leadership.

What makes our STEM program stand out

STEM Implementation K-12-to-Career

STEM is a pillar to the WD approach to education and preparing students as functioning members of the community by being exposed to the increasingly technology driven world. Between the three STEM labs, every student is exposed to the career opportunities available with STEM.

Building a Culture of Excellence

At South Central Elementary School, STEM is more than a program — it’s a culture rooted in student focus, passion for excellence, rigorous expectations, inclusiveness, and partnerships. A dedicated team of administrators and teachers leads the school’s STEM vision, ensuring students experience high-quality, research-based instruction through inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, and the engineering design process. This intentional approach creates meaningful, real-world learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

South Central’s commitment to excellence is strengthened through a highly engaged STEM Advisory Board, which includes professionals from Purdue Northwest (PNW), Hiler Industries, and REMC. Through regular collaboration, consultation, and feedback, advisory board members bring real-world expertise into the school’s STEM initiative and help guide continuous improvement and strategic planning. These partnerships ensure that the school’s STEM program aligns with Indiana STEM priorities while remaining deeply connected to community needs and workforce pathways, preparing students for success today and in the future.

Discovering Futures

South Central Elementary School empowers students to dream big and explore bold futures through dynamic STEM career exploration experiences. Using the Career Connections found in the CREATE2THINK framework, students are introduced to a wide range of real-world STEM careers that connect directly to what they are learning in the classroom. Each Career Connection highlights a unique profession, provides fast facts, and includes hands-on “Dig Deeper” activities that allow students to experience what it’s like to work in that field.

Through hands-on projects, interactive workshops, and partnerships with local STEM professionals, students embark on exciting learning journeys that spark curiosity and innovation. From engineering and environmental science to technology and design, students explore how STEM careers solve real problems and shape the world around them. These experiences help students build purpose into their learning, connect school to future opportunities, and begin imagining themselves as tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, designers, and innovators.
