At West Newton Elementary, we envision a future where every student is empowered to learn, grow, and lead through engaging STEM experiences rooted in curiosity, perseverance, and community connection. Guided by the MSD of Decatur Township mission of being Student Invested, Community Connected, West Newton is committed to creating a safe, nurturing, and academically rigorous learning environment where students are inspired to become Tomorrow Ready learners and leaders. With deep respect for the school’s rich history and strong family-centered traditions, we will continue building a culture that honors relationships, celebrates student success, and prepares learners to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of Goose Creek and our wooded campus, West Newton Elementary is uniquely positioned to provide students with authentic STEM learning opportunities that connect classroom instruction to the environment and real-world problem solving. Through hands-on inquiry, project-based learning, and technology integration, students will develop critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration skills while exploring meaningful challenges across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our STEAM programming and standards-based instruction will encourage students to think innovatively, persevere through challenges, and apply learning in purposeful ways.
Guided by our Tiger values of truth and trust, inclusion, respect, emotional awareness, and responsibility, West Newton Elementary will cultivate a culture where every student feels valued, supported, and capable of success. Through rigorous instruction, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), differentiated learning experiences, and social-emotional learning, we are committed to meeting the needs of all learners while fostering resilience, confidence, and a growth mindset. Students will learn to work collaboratively, adapt to challenges, and demonstrate leadership as they develop the durable skills necessary for lifelong learning and future success.
As a community-connected school, West Newton Elementary will continue strengthening partnerships with families and the broader community to create meaningful learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. By integrating STEM learning with real-world applications, environmental awareness, and community engagement, students will become compassionate problem solvers and innovative thinkers who understand the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and service. West Newton Elementary is dedicated to ensuring every Tiger is known, challenged, and empowered to achieve excellence.
What makes our STEM program stand out
Inspiring Future Innovators Through STARBASE

Decatur Township elementary students participate in immersive, hands-on STEM learning experiences through the district’s partnership with STARBASE Indianapolis. Students engage in engineering design challenges, molecular modeling, scientific investigations, CAD activities, and collaborative problem-solving experiences that bring science, technology, engineering, and math to life in meaningful ways.
This partnership helps students build creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence while connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. Through engaging STEM opportunities, Decatur Township is inspiring curiosity and preparing students with the durable skills needed for future success in school, careers, and beyond.
Cross-Curricular STEAM

All students are engaged in STEAM experiences that connect science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics through hands-on, cross-curricular learning. Students explore scientific concepts through creative design, build prototypes using a variety of tools and materials, investigate real-world problems through experimentation and data collection, and develop technology skills through collaborative projects.
These experiences encourage creativity, communication, critical thinking, and innovation while helping students make meaningful connections across subjects. By integrating the arts alongside STEM learning, Decatur Township empowers students to explore, create, and problem-solve in ways that prepare them for future success both inside and outside the classroom.
Hands-On Innovation with GeolEd
West Newton students engage in innovative STEM learning opportunities through collaborative projects with Decatur Central High School’s GeoLED program. Through this partnership, elementary students work alongside high school students who use CAD 3-D design software, laser cutting technology, engineering tools, and digital fabrication processes to design and create interactive learning materials connected to concepts students are exploring in the classroom.
These hands-on experiences expose West Newton students to advanced technology, real-world problem-solving, and future STEM career pathways while building creativity, communication, and collaboration skills. By connecting students with authentic project-based learning and mentorship opportunities, West Newton helps inspire curiosity, innovation, and confidence in the next generation of learners.
