What STEM means at New Market Elementary School
At New Market Elementary School, we envision a future where every student is engaged, challenged, and inspired to become a confident learner, innovative thinker, and responsible problem solver. Guided by the South Montgomery Community School Corporation mission to provide a challenging and dynamic learning experience, we are committed to empowering students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to succeed in school, future careers, and an ever-changing world.
Our STEM program fosters curiosity, creativity, and collaboration through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning experiences that connect classroom instruction to meaningful real-world applications. Students actively engage in integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics experiences that encourage exploration, critical thinking, communication, and perseverance. Through authentic problem-solving opportunities and project-based learning, students learn to ask questions, design solutions, test ideas, and reflect on their learning in ways that build confidence and resilience.
New Market Elementary School is committed to creating a student-centered environment where innovation and exploration are part of everyday learning. Students will develop foundational technology and computational thinking skills while engaging in collaborative experiences that prepare them to become adaptable and future-ready learners. By intentionally integrating communication, teamwork, responsibility, and creativity into instruction, students build durable skills that support both academic success and lifelong growth.
Our educators are dedicated to implementing research-based instructional practices that promote engagement, rigor, and meaningful STEM learning opportunities for all students. Through collaboration, continuous professional growth, and reflective practices, teachers create classrooms where every student is supported, challenged, and encouraged to reach their full potential. Families and community partners play an important role in supporting a culture of learning that values innovation, curiosity, and student success.
Above all, New Market Elementary School will be recognized as a place where students are empowered to think deeply, solve problems creatively, and develop the confidence to positively impact their school, community, and future.
What makes our STEM program stand out
Grow Lab Sustainability Project
New Market Elementary School is creating meaningful STEM experiences through its innovative “Grow Lab” sustainability initiative. Designed to connect students with agriculture, environmental science, nutrition, and hands-on problem solving, the project transforms the school garden into a living classroom where students actively plant, harvest, water, and maintain crops throughout the year. With six raised garden beds already in place and plans for a greenhouse expansion, the Grow Lab provides students with authentic opportunities to explore sustainability, healthy living, and food systems through real-world learning experiences. More than 436 students in grades Pre-K through 5 participate in the program, developing leadership, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while making a positive impact within their school and local community through food donations and service-based learning.
STEM Design & Innovation Studio
New Market Elementary School is expanding hands-on STEM learning opportunities through its cutting-edge STEM Design and Innovation Studio. Made possible through funding from the Indiana Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC), the studio provides students with access to modern technology, project-based learning experiences, and real-world problem-solving opportunities that mirror today’s STEM industries. Students engage in activities focused on coding, 3D modeling, prototyping, creativity, and collaboration while developing the critical thinking and digital literacy skills needed for future STEM careers. The studio is intentionally designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring all students have the opportunity to explore innovation, design, and career-connected STEM learning experiences.
Coding Club
New Market Elementary School expanded computer science opportunities for students through a Coding Club partnership with the local 4-H Extension Office. Designed for students in grades 3–5, the program introduced participants to computer science, programming, and game design through engaging block-based coding activities. Students explored foundational coding concepts while creating interactive games and developing problem-solving and computational thinking skills in a fun, hands-on environment. By partnering with community organizations, New Market Elementary continues to provide students with meaningful STEM experiences that build confidence and expose them to future-ready technology skills.
