What makes our STEM program stand out

Design & Innovation Learning

Southmont Junior High School is expanding student access to innovative STEM learning through the addition of its Design and Innovation Studio. Supported through a partnership with Purdue University and grant funding, the space provides students with opportunities to engage in hands-on learning experiences using robotics, 3D printers, and other emerging STEM technologies. These experiences enhance student engagement while helping students build creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and career-ready skills connected to high-demand STEM fields.

Career Exploration & Advanced Manufacturing

Southmont Junior High School provides students with meaningful opportunities to explore high-demand STEM career pathways through hands-on learning experiences like the N.E.A.T. Experience. During this immersive opportunity, 8th grade students explored advanced manufacturing and robotics through interactive activities designed to connect classroom learning to real-world industries. Experiences like these help students build problem-solving, collaboration, and technical skills while increasing awareness of future career opportunities in STEM and advanced manufacturing fields.

STEM Club & Robotics

Southmont Junior High School provides students with opportunities to extend their STEM learning beyond the classroom through hands-on experiences in the school’s STEM and Robotics Club. Students work collaboratively using robotics kits and engineering design processes to build, test, and improve robotic systems while developing creativity, teamwork, coding, and problem-solving skills. Supported through community and university partnerships, these experiences help students explore STEM career pathways while building confidence through authentic, project-based learning opportunities.
